Walking is not only a healthy form of exercise but is also the best way to see and experience the natural environment around Weymouth & Portland. From just outside the hotel, take a 20p boat ride across the harbour as the best way to start a walk up to the Nothe with its spectacular views across the breakwaters and harbour to Portland in the distance. Follow the lower coastal path along the new promenade at Newtons Cove, then up and over the footbridge, follow the hedge infront of the Coastguard lookout then walk along the coastal path until you have to scramble down onto the beach by the fallen trees! Turn right and walk on to Castle Cove beach - pause for an ice cream - then climb the steps back up to the road. Turn left and walk down into Sandsfoot beach. Above and behind the yacht club is the old railway line, now restored into a walkway that runs all the way to Ferrybridge and the beginning of the causeway to Portland. From here you can either take a bus back into Weymouth or a bus to Portland Heights for a dramatic walk along the West Weares and around the fascinating derelict Tout Quarry - keep your eyes open for some of the pieces of modern sculpture! The same bus can also take you onwards to Portland Bill with it's dramatic coastal scenery. Other excursions worth a visit include Abbotsbury Gardens and Swannery to the west or Lulworth Castle and the famous Lulworth Cove to the east. Buses depart regularly from near the hotel. Trips can be taken onboard the Condor Fast Ferry Service to Guernsey or Jersey, just ask at reception for booking details. |
